APA Announces New National Executive Director, Juliette Wolf-Robin

 American Photographic Artists (APA) today announced that it has selected Juliette Wolf-Robin as its new national executive director. APA’s mission is to help develop successful photographers and creatives by supporting them through education, rights and advocacy.

There has never been a more critical time for professional photographers to join together through an association in order to stay informed, share information and be part of a community,” states Wolf-Robin. “I step into the role of national executive director of APA with a sense of urgency that we must provide members with knowledge and tools needed to succeed, while providing actionable guidelines to protect ones rights and future earning potential.”

Juliette Wolf-RobinJuliette Wolf-Robin is a well-respected industry veteran who has worked with photographers on all aspects of the photography industry for more than 20 years. Most recently she was business development and marketing director at The Brand Union NY. She is perhaps best known for her serial entrepreneurship having launched FoundFolios, Creativity’s Spark* and the Alternative Pick. These innovative print and online resources have helped connect photographers with creatives and art buyers.

Additionally, Wolf-Robin conducted a popular series of podcast interviews with buyers, creatives and artist agents across the country that allowed artists to hear directly how best to reach their target audience and what type of promotion works.

I have known Juliette through the years and have always admired her creativity, entrepreneurship and interest in bringing photographers and creatives together. Juliette understands the ever-changing playing field the photo world has become and the importance for photographers to not only understand their value but to evolve and stay relevant,” comments APA National President Theresa Raffetto. “Throughout her career she has put an emphasis on education and knowledge for both the photographer and the user and we are excited to see where we can take APA with Juliette by our side.”

Over the years Wolf-Robin has been a noted speaker at Photo Plus Expo and at APA chapters nationally, speaking in particular about branding and marketing for photographers. Juliette will be working closely with the APA board of directors and chapter directors to not only help the association succeed but to participate in furthering the cause, sustainability and success of the industry as a whole.

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges facing our industry right now is the sheer speed in which changes are occurring,” adds Wolf-Robin. “Whether we’re discussing technology, copyright issues or the manner in which we communicate with each other, it has become essential to keep up on the latest information, rulings, and trends. I hope to assist APA members as the industry continues to evolve.”

Editorial Photographers (EP) Merges into American Photographic Artists (APA) to Build Combined Stronger Voice in Photography Industry

American Photographic Artists (APA) today announced that Editorial Photographers (EP), a highly regarded association aimed at improving profitability of editorial photography, has agreed to a merger that will benefit professional photographers around the world. The merger is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year. This merger will increase the size of APA to approximately 3,200 members.

APA is excited to have Editorial Photographers come into our association while maintaining their identity as a National Chapter of APA,” comments Stephen Best, CEO of APA National. “With so many core values of the two associations being the same, a merger is an ideal vehicle to build a stronger voice in the industry. APA looks forward to giving the support to the American Photographic Artists Editorial Photographers chapter with new, additional benefits to the current EP member.”

Editorial Photographers began in 1999 when a group of 13 San Francisco Bay Area photographers fed up with stagnant editorial rates decided they couldn’t just sit back and take it any longer so they stopped taking assignments from Business Week until they changed their rates. These 13 photographers grew into a nationwide movement.

For the past decade, EP has enjoyed partnering with APA on photography advocacy issues affecting the photo industry. Through that partnership, we have come to realize that combining the strengths of both organizations would benefit all our members. We look forward to a bright future together,” says Brian Smith, president of Editorial Photographers.

Many of the photographers who have been influential within EP are also APA members. Because of the two organizations’ shared goals and vision for the photographic industry, it is a natural fit for EP to merge into APA. The challenges editorial photographers face in the photographic field are the same facing all professional photographers that includes declining fees and the challenges of Internet use on the licensing of images. A more consolidated voice will now be heard.

Our organizations can gain strength by joining forces for the good of our industry—that’s our goal with this merger. We will continue offering great member benefits as well as assisting with initiatives such as PLUS can help encourage and support photographers everywhere,” adds Theresa Raffetto, president of APA National.

American Photographic Artists (APA) Partners with Lucie Foundation to Offer First-Ever $5k Photography Scholarship

Atlanta, GA September 28, 2011—American Photographic Artists (APA) is proud to announce its APA/Lucie Foundation Scholarship available to a deserving established professional photographer for a specific project in the amount of $5,000 through its partnership with the Lucie Foundation. APA desires to support and encourage growth and professional development, and is excited to partner with the Lucie Foundation for the 2012 grant cycle to show its commitment to advancing professional photography.

“This is the first year we are offering our own photography scholarship and I’m very proud to be a part of the program,” comments APA’s National President, Theresa Raffetto. “Tony Gale and Michael Grecco who head our scholarship committee worked diligently to make this a reality. Partnering with the Lucie Foundation has been a wonderful collaboration and we are grateful for the support they have offered.”

Professional photographers interested in applying for the scholarship will be asked to write a one-page description of the project for which they are seeking funding. Applicants can apply online after the process opens after the announcement at the Lucies onstage on November 1, 2011 and will close on April 30, 2012.

“As a photographic educator I see the need for new ways to help photographers along their individual path,” adds APA National Board Member & APA New York Chapter Representative, Tony Gale. “By joining with the Lucies on this scholarship, I see tremendous potential to continue to make a very positive impact on the photographic industry.”

The photography scholarship selection committee will be comprised of one representative from APA, as well as the Lucie Foundation Founder, Hossein Farmani, and Executive Director of the Lucie Foundation, Cat Jimenez.

“APA is proud to be working with such a prestigious organization as the Lucie Foundation,” remarks APA National Vice President and Chair of the Advocacy Committee, Michael Grecco. “We partnered with them knowing they would be the best people to administer something as important as our own scholarship.”

The Lucie Foundation’s support of photography is broad, from photojournalism to fashion photography, digital to medium format, including every other category and subcategory. The organization’s concern isn’t with genre, but rather to support visionaries producing work that is at once gripping, and original.

APA Grants $25,000 Donation to PLUS

APA Grants $25,000 Donation to PLUS

Atlanta, GA March 7, 2011—American Photographic Artists (APA) (http://www.apanational.com)  today announces the second contribution of $25,000 to the PLUS Coalition to aid in the completion of the PLUS Registry, a key component of the Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS). APA’s first $25,000 donation was in October 2009. When operational, the PLUS Registry will link images to their rights holders and will provide instant access to rights information for any image. Today’s contribution to the non-profit PLUS Coalition is part of APA’s overall plan to support the success of not only APA members, but of all photographers.

APA’s mission is Successful Photographers. By allowing photographers and their customers to leverage technology to improve image licensing and image rights management, PLUS is critical to that success. APA’s contribution to PLUS supplements APA’s ongoing advocacy efforts in support of professional photographers, including legal and legislative activities such as APA’s opposition to unfair provisions of the past orphan works bills. APA urges all organizations to recognize the need for a global, industry-neutral, non-profit registration authority for rights owners, image licenses and images, and for a universal language for communicating image rights. The PLUS Coalition has succeeded in bringing together key stakeholders from all industries and in developing a comprehensive system of international standards. The next step – the development of the PLUS Registry – is an important opportunity to realize truly positive impact on our entire profession.

APA’s contribution to PLUS is made possible by funding received from the Authors Coalition of America (ACA) in the form of royalties for overseas copying of works that cannot be identified by title or copyright owner. These funds must be used solely to support education and advocacy efforts benefitting visual artists.

APA National Advocacy Chair and Senior VP, Michael Grecco says, “These funds represent our continued support of the PLUS Registry which is close to completion. APA believes in the Registry because it will enable artists and their work to be easily identified around the world. This has the potential of bringing much needed income throughout the licensing of their images.”

“APA’s continued high-level participation in the PLUS Coalition has been key to the development of both the PLUS Standards and the PLUS Registry, says Jeff Sedlik, PLUS President and CEO. “This contribution of Author’s Coalition royalties provides much needed funding in support of our efforts.”
